Macrocosm/Microcosm

I believe a painting should attract viewers from a distance, beckoning them closer to reveal beautiful and intriguing structural subtleties and lyrical nuances. Hopefully, an otherworldly, mystical space is evoked. Good painting stimulates a rich and on-going dialogue between viewer and canvas. It should present him/her with a new visual experience revealing its physical history slowly and subtly .

I am less concerned with the picture plane as a piece of a larger representational reality. Most of my paintings are presented as abstract, physical artifacts that explore the centre, accentuated, activated yet constrained by their edges. I see them as portals or gateways.  Foreground space to inner space – the sense of moving into the centre and beyond the canvas. Ideally they stimulate a meditative state of contemplation, association and wonder.
